Mama,
L’Chaim! (Mama, to Life!)
Short
Film – Germany; USA; Belgium 2009 – rated “Highly Recommended” by the German Film Review Board
– 5 min. – all ages– Director: Elkan Spiller - Script: Elkan Spiller - Producer: Elkan Spiller
Using
few words, this brief glimpse into the shared lives of a 95-year-old
concentration camp survivor and the son who cares for her conveys the tragic
contours of the situation and leaves a strong and an indelible impression. In
this documentary short, director Elkan Spiller concentrates on small scenes
around the kitchen table, scraps of recollections in interviews and small
amounts of photographic material. In this unobtrusive way, the full extent of
the Holocaust’s effect on this family becomes tangible, as the aftereffects of its
horrors make them and even the next generation suffer to this day. A felicitous
piece of filmmaking and an impressive historical document.
